What is a Trash Rack?
Trash Racks are structures designed to prevent floating debris—such as leaves, branches, and trash—from clogging spillways or outlet pipes in retention ponds, detention ponds, and other storm water management systems. They are often recommended or even required to ensure the system functions effectively, maintains safety, and complies with environmental standards. However, the necessity isn’t universally mandated and varies by jurisdiction and specific pond design.
Safety & Functionality
Racks are highly recommended or in some cases required to prevent the discharge of floating debris and to restrict access to spillway interiors for safety purposes. For instance, guidelines suggest that principal spillway openings should be equipped with removable trash racks to avoid clogging by large debris and to protect against potential hazards. This is particularly emphasized in designs where spillways are part of dams or embankments, where clogging could lead to overtopping or reduced discharge capacity. In addition a retaining pond or other storm water management structure can become an “attractive nuisance” drawing the attention of animals and even children. In these cases trash racks may act as an effective means preventing serious injury and limiting potential liabilities.
